Garmin AXIS — a new cockpit for your aircraft after eleven years

Garmin AXIS flight display — cockpit upgrade for experimental and certificated aircraft, installation at AIR TEAM Kunovice hangar

On 8 July 2026, Garmin introduced AXIS™ — the successor to the G3X Touch™ family with a larger display, fewer boxes in the panel, and optional built-in navigation and COM/NAV radio in one unit. AXIS targets ultralight, LSA and experimental aircraft as well as certificated piston SEP/MEP aircraft (hundreds of types per AML STC).

On certificated models, the 11.6″ display can optionally integrate IFR GPS, VHF COM, VHF NAV and audio panel in one unit for the first time in the GA retrofit segment — less wiring, lower weight, and a cleaner panel without a classic avionics stack.

AIR TEAM supplies hardware, configuration and installation support for owners of ultralight, LSA and experimental aircraft. For certificated aircraft we deliver turnkey installation in Kunovice under EASA Part-145 — from consultation through release to service.

AXIS variants — what each display offers

AXIS comes in three sizes: 11.6″ landscape (available now), 8″ portrait and 8″ landscape (planned Q1 2027). Each display can be configured as PFD, MFD or EIS. Base units in all sizes include built-in VFR GPS — same as G3X Touch.

Variant Display VFR GPS IFR GPS COM NAV Audio
GDU 116B 11.6″
GDU 116C 11.6″
GDU 116NC 11.6″
Base 8″ 8″

Add IFR navigation to a 116B or 8″ base unit with an external navigator (GTN Xi), or choose 116C/116NC. 116C/116NC variants exist for both experimental and certificated installations — same model designations, different regulatory framework.

Indicative Garmin pricing (USD, excluding installation):

  • Base VFR system (experimental): from approx. USD 8,000
  • 11.6″ with IFR GPS + NAV/COM + audio (certificated): from approx. USD 28,000
  • Dual 11.6″ IFR NAV/COM: from approx. USD 51,800

We prepare a full EUR/CZK quote for your aircraft and chosen configuration — from the display alone through antennas, wiring, additional equipment and installation in Kunovice.

G3X Touch upgrade — larger display, same panel opening

G3X Touch remains on sale. AXIS is the new generation for pilots who want a larger display, deeper integration or a full panel refresh.

  • 7″ G3X Touch → 8″ AXIS and 10″ G3X Touch → 11.6″ AXIS — AXIS has a narrower bezel, so the larger screen fits the existing opening
  • Same mounting points and many existing sensors; with a suitable configuration roughly ~8 pin changes on connectors
  • Display-only upgrade: from approx. USD 6,000 (experimental) / USD 10,000 (certificated), excluding installation
  • Garmin offers installation kits for upgrading from G3X Touch

For certificated aircraft, installation runs under STC as part of a Kunovice hangar project. First 11.6″ deliveries follow FAA STC (July 2026); we verify EASA STC validation for your aircraft before a binding order.

What you'll actually notice in the cockpit

Emergency button + Smart Glide™ — dedicated hardware button on the display bezel for fast access to emergency functions. On engine power loss, Smart Glide suggests airports within glide range; with GFC 500/600 autopilot it can take over the route automatically.

Runway Occupancy Awareness + SurfaceWatch™ — alerts for runway and taxiway traffic (requires compatible ADS-B, typically GTX).

Synthetic vision + 3D SafeTaxi® — 3D terrain, obstacles and airport environment on the PFD. Pathway rectangles visualise flight track in IMC or at dusk.

EIS — engine protection — engine parameters with colour-coded warning bands. After landing, logs can upload via Garmin Pilot to flyGarmin.com or analytics services.

Connectivity and expansion:

  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C (data + charging up to 27 W)
  • HDMI — camera video on the display
  • GTR 205R — remote-mount COM controlled from the AXIS display (certificated aircraft)
  • PlaneSync / GDL 60 — automatic databases and log upload (Garmin plans from Q1 2027)

How to get started

You own an ultralight, LSA or experimental aircraft

  1. Browse the AXIS category for experimental aircraft or submit a quote request with your aircraft type
  2. We align configuration together — display, navigation, radios, wiring
  3. Install yourself, with your installer, or through AIR TEAM service in Kunovice

You own a certificated aircraft

  1. Complete the avionics installation form or email airteam@airteam.eu (type, S/N, registration)
  2. We verify eligibility per AML STC and prepare a non-binding quote
  3. Installation in Kunovice, test flight and release to service

Frequently asked questions

Do I need ADS-B for traffic and runway occupancy alerts?

Yes — traffic overlay and Runway Occupancy Awareness require compatible ADS-B (typically GTX series).

Does the NAV/COM variant replace a standalone GTN Xi?

For most single-engine IFR operations, yes. For more complex panels or twin-engine aircraft we assess individually. For ultralight/LSA/experimental, 116B + external GTN Xi remains common.

What about my existing G3X Touch?

It keeps working — Garmin continues to sell it. Upgrade to AXIS fits the same panel cutout; see section above.

When will AXIS be available from AIR TEAM?

11.6″ displays: deliveries from July 2026 (FAA STC). We verify EASA STC validation for your aircraft. 8″ displays: planned Q1 2027.

Experimental vs certificated AXIS?

Same display model designations (116B/C/NC), different regulatory framework for installation and documentation.

Does FAA STC apply in Europe?

For certificated aircraft we verify EASA STC validation for your specific type before a binding order — part of the Kunovice consultation.

Why is there no EUR/CZK price on the website?

Every project differs (aircraft type, configuration, installation). We show indicative Garmin USD pricing above; we prepare EUR/CZK quotes individually.
